THE QWERTY STAFF

Mark A. Carey, M.A. founded QWERTY Education Services in 1986. As Educational Director, Mark is usually the first to speak with families who are new to QWERTY to evaluate their needs and plan for services. Mark now lives on the island of Kaua`i where he founded and operates Kaulele Education Services, an education consulting service in Kilauea. He makes regular visits to the Bay Area to work with students and staff. He has taught all ages in regular and special education since 1976. Mark holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from Antioch College and an M.A. in Learning Handicapped from SFSU along with lifetime Learning Handicapped and Multiple Subjects credentials.

Michael P. Perez, M.S. is the Center Director and works with students of all ages in a broad range of subjects and skills including math, science, English, history, keyboarding, study skills, organization, and motivation. He joined QWERTY in 1998 as an education consultant after tutoring students in math, science, and English in a variety of tutorial and college settings since 1986. Michael holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and an M.S. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford. In addition, he took coursework in business and psychology at Stanford, Santa Clara, and San Jose State Universities.

Koreen Wang Paterson, M.Ed., LEP is an Educational Psychologist who joined QWERTY in 2000. She conducts psychoeducational evaluations for students of all ages. Koreen began teaching at the elementary level in regular education in 1987, and she has taught and worked as an educational psychologist across the grades in special education. She has a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Education from U.C.L.A. Koreen holds a Multiple Subjects Credential, a California Pupil Services Credential (School Psychologist), and an Educational Psychologist license.

David P. Sun, M.S. joined QWERTY in the fall of 2002 to provide academic tutoring in higher math, science, and study skills to secondary students and adults. David holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. from MIT. When not at QWERTY, he is employed as a mechanical engineer. David has worked as a special education teacher's aide and as a teaching assistant at MIT.

Ann S. Moon, Ed.M. is a teaching and curriculum specialist who joined QWERTY in 2005. She works with students of all ages in a wide range of skills and subjects with a particular emphasis in writing, reading, listening, speaking, organization, motivation, and study skills. She has taught college prep English and literature classes in high school, ESL in K-8 classes, and has filled a variety of other teaching, tutoring, and mentoring roles. She is fluent in Korean and proficient in Spanish. Her B.A. is in English and Spanish from Wellesley College and her Masters Degree is in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is certificated in secondary English in Massachussetts.

Betty L. Willdorff, M.Ed. is a learning specialist who joined QWERTY in 2006. Betty completed her Masters degree in Education at Lesley College and her B.S. in Child Development at University of California at Davis. Betty has earned K-12 Multiple Subject, Learning Handicapped, and CA Community Colleges credentials. She worked for many years as a diagnostician and educational planner for the disability resource centers at local community colleges and maintained an independent private practice as an education consultant. Betty provides evaluation services for students of all ages and tutorial support for students in the areas of study skills, organization, and language arts.

Natalie Varney, M.A., is a learning specialist who joined QWERTY in 2007 to fulfill two roles. She is a member of our diagnostic team, performing academic and cognitive educational evaluations of students of varying ages. In addition, Natalie serves as a Co-Pilot tutor to provide specialized instruction to a limited number of students of varying ages. Natalie holds a Masters degree in Special Education from San Francisco State University, a Multiple Subjects credential from Hayward State University, and a Bachelors degree in Psychology from University of Santa Clara.

Anne Hedges, M.A. is an independently contracted tutor who works with QWERTY students of middle school, high school, college, and adult ages with an emphasis on written language, other language arts supports, and study skills. She holds a Masters Degree from Dominican University in Humanities, a BA from UC Santa Cruz in Journalism, and a Certificate in Teaching Composition from SF State University.

Diana Bowman assumed the responsibilities of Office Administrator in January 2007 to support and coordinate the varied staff needs and requirements of QWERTY in Menlo Park and Kaulele Education Services in Kaua`i, Hawai`i. Diana has 29 years’ experience with FedEx in various staff and management positions, including customer service, sales, operations and engineering management. Diana now divides her time among her positions with QWERTY and Kaulele and various volunteer and church activities. Her background includes an undergraduate degree in elementary education from the University of Utah.
