ACADEMIC TUTOR FOR QWERTY CO-PILOTS PROGRAM

Our organization is seeking to add one or more tutors to our new QWERTY Co-Pilots Program this fall. This is a rare, excellent opportunity to become part of a well-established professional education practice.

Overview of company:
QWERTY Education Services, founded in 1986, is a private practice of professionals offering expert individual tutoring, educational evaluation, and guidance to students of all ages and their families in our Menlo Park office. Our staff includes a variety of specialists from the fields of learning disabilities, educational psychology, and educational therapy, as well as other tutors. Students come to us with a variety of needs including homework support, organization and motivation support, strategy-building to manage learning issues, remedial and enrichment skill-building, and more. Some have diagnosed learning differences that present specific challenges, while others simply require support to manage the myriad demands of local schools. Students range in age from first grade through high school and college. We seek candidates who are comfortable with any part or all of that range.

QWERTY Co-Pilots:
Co-Pilots are independently contracted tutors from varying backgrounds who offer a broad range of educational supports outside of our Core Tutor model, with the support and supervision of QWERTY. Co-Pilots will have expertise in specific areas that lends itself to particular students. As examples, a Co-Pilot might be an exceptional biologist, a charismatic athlete, a master of Russian language, or a compassionate and patient coach. Co-Pilots provide tutoring at the student’s home in 90-minute sessions, in a variety of content areas and learning-related skills such as study strategies, motivation, and organization for students that vary in age.

This is a part time position with potential to grow to full time if desired. We welcome candidates who can dedicate as little as one afternoon and evening to this service (three hours of student contact) per week, though we encourage a more extensive role. Appropriate candidates who wish to work multiple days must be in a position to add hours gradually as referrals allow. Co-Pilots would typically provide individual academic tutoring at the students’ homes Monday through Friday beginning in the afternoon (and infrequently and optionally some mornings) during the school year. In some cases, families may have an interest in support on weekends. A minimum commitment to this role with QWERTY would be an academic year, and a multi-year commitment is our goal.

Requirements:
Co-Pilots are selected based on their ability to fill specific roles, and the appropriate background may vary in each case. There is no strict requirement for credentialing for Co-Pilot tutoring positions, although valid teacher certification is considered an asset and an indicator of professional background. Higher education degrees are desirable but no specific requirements exist as general rules. Teaching or tutoring experience is required and can be variable in nature. A background/fingerprint check is mandatory, as are sound personal and professional references. Moderate computer competency is necessary.

Compensation:
Co-Pilot employees are paid as independent contractors based on the number of monthly student contact hours. Additional time is required for planning, preparation, and communication. The exact amount paid per Co-Pilot tutor per session is dependent on the billing rate for any given client as well as factors such as experience and longevity in the company. New Co-Pilots typically start at $35 per hour and will have agreed-upon benchmarks for advancement.
